Regarding the backend a nice ressource for information is here...
http://hyperlatex.sourceforge.net/
Just a remark about the unhappy, imho, choice to use emacs: no systems where there is no emacs (i.e. a more than 100 MB package an end user or a Vim-er like me would never use) there is no way to use hyperlatex. One of the many features I like best about texinfo is its KISS (keep it simple, stupid!) approach, which renders it an universal piece or software... and the same remark would be taken into account when speaking about perl, sgmltools, python, etc., etc... while almost all systems support c or c++, not any system do support all the other flavours of valuable programming languages.
Besides, have a look at P!Tux - http://217.109.169.18/pitux - another small distribution suitable to give new life to old computers 486/16MBRam/100MBHD...
Cheers,
Valentino
