There is a difference - sure, it could be possible to display the
escaped sequences as 8bit characters on demand (as psgml can do it for
SGML entities).

I'd simply consider the preprocessed code as volatile; its only purpose
is to run texi2dvi, etc. on it. This is how I have solved this issue
for a few German texts.
